New Wingnut Target: ‘RINO’ Scott Brown

BS Top - Avlon Wingnuts Brown Charles Krupa / AP Photo Not a week after Scott Brown’s stunning Senate victory, the overheated praise is dissolving into accusations that he’s a Republican in Name Only. John Avlon on the out-of-control RINO-hunting impulse.
From savior to heretic in one week—well, that was fast.

Drake’s harshest judgments were reserved for Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

“Michael Steele is a RINO—he’s running on the race card and the big-tent card,” he said. “He wants to be the ethnic group in the GOP that says that Republicans aren’t all white radical right wing.”

Wiley represents the outer reaches of wingnut-dom, but his views are echoed in debates across the netroots echo chamber.Read more at www.thedailybeast.com

NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana’s governor and a U.S. senator joined Friday in calling for the ouster of a local official who refused to marry an interracial couple, saying his actions clearly broke the law.

“Perhaps he’s worried the kids will grow up and be president,” said Bill Quigley, director of the Center for Constitutional Rights and Justice, referring to President Barack Obama, the son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas.

“A justice of the peace is legally obligated to serve the public, all of the public,” Quigley said. “Racial discrimination has been a violation of Louisiana and U.S. law for decades. No public official has the right to pick and choose which laws they are going to follow.”

The New York Times leads with news that in the face of stiffening Republican opposition to health care reform, Democrats look increasingly likely to quit wooing minority lawmakers and focus instead on building support among their own ranks. In theory, that should allow Democratic leaders to cut through the noise and push through more speedy and substantive reforms; still, going it alone is no guarantee of success. The Washington Post leads with a report on Democratic infighting over the White House’s apparent shift away from the public option, a move that riled progressives and threatened to derail the broader debate. “I don’t understand why the left of the left has decided that this is their Waterloo,” sighed one senior White House adviser. “It’s a mystifying thing.”

Really?  Really? Wanting the public option is the property of “the left of the left”?  I really hope this ’senior’ source is in fact a nobody without any influence whatsoever on policy-making.  As @Rivenhomewood so pithily pointed out: the public option is the compromise option.  It is not in any way an extremist idea.

Neighbors frown over military family’s tattered American flag

Faded nearly white and torn to shreds, the American flag flying in front of the home of Louis and Jessie Haros has drawn strange looks, and anger, from passers-by in recent weeks.

This week Paul Haros, a corporal in the California National Guard, is scheduled to return from Iraq. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Operation Desert Storm, and has served three tours in Iraq as a member of the Army National Guard.

“Before he left, he brought the flag over and put it up,” Louis Haros said. “I told him I wouldn’t take it down until he came back. I didn’t realize it would get so bad so quickly, but I’m still leaving it up until he comes home.”
